Majblomman

Digitalization, App Development, and User-Centered Design

When Majblomman, one of Sweden’s oldest and most cherished non-profit organizations, needed to modernize its systems to meet today’s demands for user-friendliness and IT security, they turned to us.
Together with Any4m, we developed a flexible, scalable and future-proof solution that not only streamlines the sale of Majblommor but also makes it easier for children and their families to participate in the annual fundraising campaign.

Background

In recent years, Majblomman has invested in several digital initiatives to make it easier for children to sell Majblommor.

Among these is the Majblomman app, a mobile application that children use while selling the flowers. It keeps track of how many flowers they have in their bag and how much profit they have made. The app also allows group leaders to send messages and monitor the children’s sales in real time.

To simplify payments, the app supports both Swish and card payments, making it easy and secure for customers to purchase flowers. Additionally, there is an accounting app that helps children smoothly compile their sales and earnings.

One important factor for us when selecting suppliers was the ability to utilize the most modern tools, while also achieving better architecture and clearer ownership of the development process internally. We’ve now reached that point, and we look forward to the opportunities to create even more value for our users.

Needs

The Majblomman app and web shop faced several challenges, both in terms of user-friendliness and managing the large volume of transactions that occur during a short and intense period each year. There was a need for a solution that was easy to use, flexible, and functional, with a simple and streamlined architecture.

To meet the fast-changing demands and the high expectations for usability, Majblomman needed to be able to quickly adjust its workflows. This required a technical solution that not only enabled rapid adaptations but also fostered close collaboration within the national association and with local chapters and volunteers, so they could act together efficiently.

Since Majblomman was already using several different systems and applications, a modern platform was needed – one that could integrate with the existing infrastructure while also serving as a flexible foundation for future development.

Solution

To address the challenges Majblomman faced, both in terms of user-friendliness and maintaining their applications, Any4m’s platform was selected as the solution. This platform enables fast and flexible development through low-code, which means that software can be created with minimal coding. This approach offers several advantages: it reduces costs, simplifies future updates, and makes it easier to adapt to changes.

One of the reasons for this choice was the challenges posed by traditional apps, which are built specifically for certain operating systems like iOS or Android. These often require more maintenance and can be harder to update. By using Any4m’s low-code platform, all necessary functionalities could be recreated in a simpler way that is easier to manage and more flexible for future development.

After mapping system dependencies and involving Majblomman’s staff in visualizing workflows, complete applications were created using low-code. The result was a Flutter app for iOS and Android, as well as web applications for e-commerce and accounting, providing Majblomman with a future-proof and user-friendly solution.

Result

Nexer and Any4m have helped create a more flexible architecture for Majblomman, which can now scale better and reduce the risk of downtime. By using queues, which act as “waiting lists” within the system, parts of the system can temporarily pause, for instance, to restart or allocate more resources, without affecting the rest of the system.

“During the busiest periods, we were able to handle up to 40 payments per second, which shows that the system can truly manage a high volume of transactions,” says Steinar Eiriksson, Nexer.

For Majblomman, this means their system is now better equipped to handle the intense sales period every spring. With a more stable platform, they can avoid technical issues and ensure that all children and customers have a seamless experience.

Every child selling Majblommor now has their own web shop that they can share with family and friends, allowing them to sell more flowers beyond just the physical ones they received. Majblomman also has its own web shop where visitors can purchase products year-round or start a digital “Majblomma fund” to support a specific organization, group, or fundraiser.

This gives Majblomman more ways to raise money and support its important work in helping children living in vulnerable situations.

about Low code

Low-code is a development method that allows applications to be created faster and more easily by minimizing the need for traditional coding. Some of the biggest advantages of low-code are the faster development of new applications and lower costs.

Another important aspect is that low-code boosts innovation and makes the business more process-oriented. It also reduces dependence on IT expertise, as non-developers can create simpler applications on their own. At the same time, professional developers benefit from a more efficient workflow, allowing them to focus on creating value without having to worry about operations, security, management, or support.
