Skistar

The app that makes climate impact visible – and sustainable choices easier.

Together with Skistar and Kairos Future, we’ve created an app that makes it easy to understand the climate impact of travel. The app calculates the carbon footprint of different journeys, helping travelers compare transport options and make smarter choices on the road to Sweden’s 2045 climate goal. The project is supported by Shift Sweden through the Impact Innovation: Future Places program.

BaKground

Reaching Sweden’s goal of becoming climate neutral by 2045 will take a collective effort, from both individuals and businesses. One key step is making our climate impact visible, especially when it comes to travel, where every choice of transport matters.

Each year, thousands of travelers visit Skistar’s destinations across the Nordics. Aware of the footprint that travel leaves behind, Skistar wanted to be part of the change. Together with Kairos Future, the idea was born to create an app that makes it easy to calculate travel emissions and explore more sustainable ways to get there.

The vision: to inspire conscious choices and make the climate impact of travel something we can all see – and act on.

To reduce our total emissions by 2045, we need a better understanding, individually, of how to make smarter travel choices.

Needs

The goal was to create a simple, user-friendly app that calculates a traveler’s carbon footprint. It lets users compare different ways to get around and shows how their emissions measure up against Sweden’s 2045 climate target.

The biggest challenge was making the calculations accurate, without making the app complicated. Users only need to enter a few details, but the results are realistic enough to clearly show the difference between travel options.

This gives users a clear view of how their choices affect the climate, and helps them see how to travel more sustainably within their own CO₂ budget.

Solution

The solution is a web-based app that users can access easily via a QR code. Keeping it simple was key to lowering the barrier and making carbon calculations accessible to everyone.

The calculations are based on data from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, which provides documented emission values for different types of vehicles. These figures form the foundation of the app’s estimates.

To get a more precise measurement of travel distance, Google’s API was integrated, allowing the app to calculate distances based on the chosen mode of transport.

By combining route and vehicle type, users receive an estimate of their carbon emissions, giving them a clear view of how different travel choices impact the climate.

Result

The result is an app where travelers can quickly see their emissions, compare different modes of transport, and get an estimate of their personal CO₂ budget.

By visualizing climate impact in an accessible way, the app gives users a clearer understanding of how their choices affect emissions, and inspires them to consider more sustainable ways to travel next time.
