Mobile Resource Suicide Prevention (MRS) is a department at Örebro University Hospital (USÖ) dedicated to reducing and preventing suicide attempts and suicides. Their mission extends beyond the hospital, aiming to strengthen collaboration across the Örebro Region, including its 12 municipalities, emergency services, businesses, and other key stakeholders. This collaborative approach seeks to enhance understanding of how societal contributions can improve prevention efforts. In collaboration with MRS, we have developed an app that they can now use to facilitate their work.
Recognizing the importance of digitization in modern healthcare, MRS is cautiously moving towards digital solutions to enhance both patient care and employee efficiency. Through their network, Nexer Örebro identified a need for a mobile application that could streamline the department’s work processes and provide a more supportive experience for users in crisis.
While there are existing applications in the field of mental health, none fully addressed the specific needs of MRS. The department required a tailored mobile application where users can save their crisis plan, organize essential contacts, and collect meaningful images and YouTube clips that could evoke positive memories.
Creating an application that resonates with the target audience – individuals who may be in vulnerable and emotionally sensitive situations – requires a deep understanding of their needs and potential pain points. The challenge was to design an interface that is not only functional but also comforting and intuitive, ensuring users can easily access critical resources when they need them most.
Adding to the complexity, the development team was tasked with learning a new framework and delivering a fully functional application for both Android and iOS within a tight timeframe. This required them to rapidly acquire new skills and apply them effectively under pressure.
To meet these challenges, the development team adopted an Agile methodology, enabling them to adapt quickly and collaborate closely with the customer throughout the project. This approach allowed for iterative development, ensuring that each stage of the process was aligned with the end-users’ needs and feedback.
Given the requirement to release the app on both Android and iOS platforms, the team chose Flutter, a developer-friendly toolkit that allows for cross-platform development from a single codebase. Even though the developers were new to the technology, they took on the challenge and used Flutter to build a basic version of the app (MVP) on time.
The outcome is a free mobile application, now available on both Google Play and the App Store, designed to support the general public in Sweden. For the Suicide Prevention team at USÖ, the app has become a valuable tool, enabling them to work more efficiently while providing personalized support to their clients.
The app allows users to easily document their crisis plan, store important contacts, and collect personal images and YouTube clips that offer comfort during difficult times. Its user-friendly design has been well-received, making a meaningful impact on those who rely on it.
