A NEW TAKE ON PRODUCT SAFETY TRAINING

The Volvo Group Trucks Operations – Better Safe Than Sorry

The challenge

Making Product Safety Engaging

Product safety is the Volvo Group’s top priority, ensuring a ‘safety first’ approach by systematically evaluating safety risks before addressing other product needs. GTO (Volvo Group Trucks Operations) sought to develop an engaging training application to support this. This application would aim to educate GTO employees and other Volvo staff about product safety in a GTO context, helping them make daily decisions to ensure safe products for customers.

The solution

A Digital and Analog board game and films

Nexer Maverick developed a two-step learning experience consisting of four short animated films introducing users to the topic, followed by a fun, engaging, and challenging digital board game, Better Safe than Sorry, to deepen learning. The game is accessible on laptops and mobile devices. An analog board game version is also available for those without computer access during work hours. The films and the digital board game can be accessed via Navigator, Volvo Group’s Learning Management System.

Key actions:
  • Four short animated movies with a voice-over. Subjects are: 1) Introduction to Product Safety 2) How Do We Identify Risks? 3) What is Compliance with [CC]? 4) Safety Culture.
  • A Digital board game: A 3D game where players move a truck on a board by rolling dice. They answer product safety questions at stops with three choices, where one is correct. Correct answers earn points, with faster answers earning more. The board has spaces that add or deduct points, and players aim to achieve bronze, silver, or gold levels on a personal high-score system.
  • An analog board game: The board, game pieces, dice, and questions are printable PDFs.

This approach makes a serious subject more accessible, engaging, and memorable without being considered childish.

“The best online training I have ever taken. The content is extremely important, and it was approached fun and engagingly. I definitely recommend it to 100% of Volvo employees at all levels.”
The Outcome

Employees are more product safety aware

Now, GTO has effective, scalable, and long-lasting product safety training that makes employees more aware of product safety, which can be enhanced by adding new questions and scenarios.

Key results:
  • 4.8/5 in review by users.
  • Increased confidence: Users feel more confident in identifying product safety issues.
  • Gamification improves the learning experience: Most people have played a board game such as Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit, so the threshold to start playing Better Safe than Sorry is low. According to user feedback, adding game elements such as tossing dice, facing challenges, and receiving points makes the learning experience more fun, memorable, and effective.
