Modern SCADA Solution Optimized Recipharm Karlskoga’s Water Facility
Recipharm Karlskoga manufactures semi-solid pharmaceuticals such as creams, gels, and ointments. In an industry like this, where precision, quality, and safety are crucial, reliable system solutions are a fundamental requirement. Nexer MyTeam has supported Recipharm Karlskoga with management and system development since 2001. When one of their systems needed to be replaced in 2013, Nexer MyTeam was once again entrusted to build the new solution.
BacKground
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most regulated industries in the world, with extremely high demands on quality, safety, and documentation. Recipharm Karlskoga uses water in the production of pharmaceutical ingredients, and the water must undergo rigorous purification processes and controls to meet strict purity requirements. This is achieved through a Water For Injection (WFI) facility, where the water is purified and prepared.
To monitor and control the process, Recipharm Karlskoga uses a SCADA application (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The SCADA system is essential for collecting and analyzing data in real-time, managing alarms, and ensuring that processes function as they should.
needs
When the existing SCADA system became outdated and no longer met the company’s requirements for modern technology and flexibility, they realized it was time for an upgrade. The system needed to be controllable and manageable on-site, but also accessible regardless of the user’s location. The system also needed to offer functionality for monitoring, operating, and logging data, as well as the ability to analyze process data to optimize operations. Security and traceability were also central requirements, given the strict regulations governing pharmaceutical production.
Solution
The team at Nexer created a web-based SCADA application that offers real-time process data visualization, alarm management, and an audit trail for traceability. The application also enables the operation of objects and configuration of thresholds and delays, providing full control over the processes. It includes features for report generation, logging of process data, and system administration, and sends automatic notifications via email when needed. Once the application was ready, it was deployed in their internal IT environment, allowing the system to be accessed both internally via the office network and externally via VPN connection.
Results
The new web-based SCADA application has provided Recipharm Karlskoga with a modern and flexible system that ensures water quality in their production. Thanks to continuous logging and detailed reports, they can now easily follow up and analyze process data over time. Real-time notifications allow them to quickly act on any deviations, and the ability to access the system regardless of their location has facilitated their management of the WFI facility.
Nexer MyTeam continues to be responsible for the management and further development of the system, and the now over twenty-year-long partnership continues.
