From the mine to the cloud
How Nexer helped LKAB from on-premise to SharePoint Modern
With its extensive and complex environments, the on-premise solution was well suited to LKAB’s specific needs for many years. When it was time to modernise and move to the cloud, they partnered with Nexer for a phased migration to SharePoint Modern. With a focus on increased accessibility, the intranet was prioritized as the first area to migrate.
Background
Nexer and LKAB have had a long-term partnership where Nexer has offered support and development services for over ten years and is now part of their digital transformation journey. During the years of a complete on-premise solution, SharePoint was used as a development platform where systems were built to meet specific needs. This solution created a large and complex environment that had to be migrated when LKAB decided to move to the cloud. An environment that included everything from custom templates to custom navigation. Since not everything could be moved at once, the transition was prioritised in stages. The main focus was on making it easy for employees to reach each other and share news and other important communications, regardless of whether they were above or below ground.
the solution
In the gradual transition to SharePoint Modern, LKAB chose to first highlight the communication parts and the intranet. The aim was to effectively reach out with information to its employees. They received support from Nexer’s dedicated Customer Success Manager who helped with the strategy and advice on the transition in close cooperation with LKAB’s communications department. In addition, Nexer also assisted with development, support and continuous training of editors during the project. Before the transition, employees could not access the intranet via mobile, which was a problem with the existing on-premise solution. With SharePoint Modern, this was solved, and now employees can smoothly use the intranet from any device – even down in the mine.
After the intranet migration, several customised solutions are in the queue to be migrated to SharePoint Modern. Among other things, an operational system with guidelines for work within the company.

From the beginning of the project, the collaboration between Nexer and LKAB has not only been smooth, but the decision making process has also been short. Despite the complexity of the project, it has been implemented quickly. With several employees from Nexer who have collaborated with LKAB for over ten years, there is a deep understanding and knowledge of the business – both in project management and development. This has created a high level of trust between them and has proven to be valuable in new projects like this, where time does not have to be spent getting to know each other. Instead, the solutions can be created quickly and be very precise.
